Writing is one of my favorite subjects to teach. I love coming up with creative prompts that match our monthly theme!
For the month of January, we have been reading and learning about Martin Luther King Jr. I decided to have my students brainstorm ways that they can “make the world a better place” just like MLK! The ideas that we brainstormed were the basis for our writing.
One of the books that we read was, Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day by Joel Kupperstein.
Next, we brainstormed ideas about how WE can change the world. I had such an amazing discussion with my students about things that we can do here at school and at home to be leaders and emulate Dr. King. We created a class bubble map. You can see our sentence frame on the bottom was: “I will _____________.” I use phonetic/inventive spelling when I create our charts. I like to model and writing exactly what my students are thinking as they are sounding out words!
Students then created their own bubble maps that they would later use for their writing.
Finally, the next day, we turned our bubble maps into writing. I just love how these turned out!! We used a directed drawing from First and Kinder Blue Skies.
I have been working hard with my students on checking our writing. We use a writing rubric and a dry erase marker to check our writing before we turn it in! You can find this rubric in my Writing Centers Pack.
